January 19–26 marks National Passenger Safety Week, a campaign dedicated to empowering passengers to take an active role in road safety. With U.S. roadway deaths still at alarming levels, it’s clear that just telling drivers to “be safe” isn’t enough. Passengers can—and should—make a difference.
Why It Matters
In 2023, over 40,000 people died in traffic crashes, and nearly 24,000 were occupants of passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, vans, pickups). Alarmingly, almost half of those killed weren’t wearing seat belts.
Unsafe driving behaviors—like texting, speeding, and driving under the influence—continue to rise. Passengers have the power to stop these deadly choices.
The Courage to Intervene
National Passenger Safety Week encourages everyone to Speak Up when they feel unsafe. If your driver is distracted, impaired, or driving recklessly, your voice could save lives. One courageous voice can change a deadly choice.
Take the Pledge Today

Speak Up – If the driver is distracted, speeding, or impaired, say something. Your voice matters.
Secure Children Properly – Use the right car seat or booster for their age, height, and weight.
Avoid Distractions – Help the driver stay focused. Keep conversations calm and phones out of sight.
