This week marks Burn Awareness Week, and the American Burn Association is encouraging workplaces of all types to promote practical, life-saving burn prevention strategies.
Burn injuries can happen in an instant—and often in places we consider safe. According to the CDC, more than 398,000 people sought medical care for burns in the U.S. in 2021. Many of these injuries occur in the workplace and are preventable through simple strategies and precautions.
Top 5 Workplace Burn Prevention Tips:
1. Use Protective Gear: Wear the right PPE—such as gloves, aprons, helmets, or flame‑resistant clothing—whenever you’re working with heat, chemicals, or machinery.
2. Practice Safe Heat Handling: Keep a close eye on hot oil, boiling liquids, ovens, and equipment. Open lids away from your face and never leave heat sources unattended.
3. Inspect and Maintain Equipment: Regularly check cords, tools, vehicles, and machinery for damage or overheating, and always follow safety procedures during maintenance.
4. Manage Flammable Materials Carefully: Store fuels, chemicals, and other combustible items properly. Keep them away from heat sources and avoid exposing them to sparks or open flames.
5. Be Prepared for Emergencies: Make sure fire extinguishers and first aid kits are easy to access. Know evacuation routes and participate in routine emergency drills.
