Why Cone Health: On interview day, Cone Health immediately stood out as a program that balances strong clinical training, meaningful mentorship, and genuine resident and faculty support. Meeting the current residents during the social hour made it clear that they were not only confident in their training, but truly thriving in the residency program, a culture I very much want to be part of. Conversations with faculty and residents left me with the strong sense that Cone Health is a warm, collaborative community where I can grow both professionally and personally. I’m excited to train in Greensboro, NC, and become part of this program and its supportive culture.

Why Cone Health: The city of Greensboro holds a rich culture that emphasizes diversity while maintaining an approachable feel. When I found Cone Health while researching residencies, I became enamored. The smaller size of the program allows me to become a real part of the community here and amplifies the learning experience. I cannot wait to dive into this community of faculty, residents, staff, and patients!

Why Cone Health: Cone Health felt like the kind of place where people genuinely care for one another, and that stayed with me long after the interview. I was drawn not only to the warmth and sense of community within the program, but also to its comprehensive clinical training and strong emphasis on collaborative care. The smaller class size was also a huge plus for me, creating opportunities for a more personalized mentorship experience. It felt like the kind of place where I could grow with both confidence and compassion into the psychiatrist I hope to become.

North Carolina already feels familiar and special to me. Having spent time in Greensboro before and with some of my closest friends and family living in the state, being there has always felt comforting and easy in the best way. Altogether, Cone Health felt like the right next step in building both a career and a life with purpose.

Why Cone Health: I ranked Cone Health #1 because of the well-rounded training the program offers. I had a fantastic interview experience and am especially excited about the opportunity to learn psychotherapy from Dr. Mark Lewis and the rest of the team. During the resident meet-and-greet, the residents were welcoming and down-to-earth, and I could genuinely see myself fitting in with the group. Having lived in North Carolina for a few years and with my support system nearby, I knew this was where I wanted to train and continue growing into the best physician I can be for my patients. I feel fortunate to be part of the Cone Health community!

And yes, being close to Cook Out doesn’t hurt either.

I’m also drawn to the small residency class size, which offers more opportunities for hands-on learning and mentorship from attendings. Meeting Dr. Mark Lewis, with his expertise in psychotherapy and working with neurodivergent children, solidified my desire to train here where I can develop the skills to be the type of psychiatrist I hope to be. Why Cone Health: Every medical student knows that the fourth-year residency interview season can be emotionally and physically unforgiving. (It certainly was for me!) But after interviewing with the Cone Health psychiatric residency program, I felt something that I hadn’t before: an unusual combination of both surprise and relief. I was surprised by how welcomed I felt during the interview itself – the faculty and residents were superb, kind, and genuinely interested in getting to know us. And I was relieved by how well the Cone Health program aligned with my goals: a small class size with close supervision, an emphasis on community mental health, proximity to my family, a supportive, friendly work environment, and all in a growing, mid-sized city. I can’t wait to get started!

Why Cone Health: Cone Health's emphasis on pioneering patient-centered care and commitment to continuous improvement stood out to me from the get go. After interactions with exceptional leadership and residents alike, it was clear to me that this environment was made to foster real growth. I know there will be extraordinary opportunities ahead to learn, but also to establish meaningful initiatives that will leave a lasting, positive impact. Both the overarching mission of Cone Health to enhance the quality and accessibility of care to all, as well as Greensboro's dedication to diversity and excellence, align with my personal values. I look forward to caring for the patients who call Guilford County home. As a bonus, the area is conveniently located near some of the most breathtaking rock-climbing areas in the Piedmont mountains, like Moore's Wall and Sauratown. Why Cone Health: I was looking for a close-knit program on the interview trail and felt that when I visited. After living in Greensboro before medical school, I fell in love with the area due to the diversity of people, food options, and various other activities. I look forward to training and giving back to a community that helped nurture my development!

Why Cone Health: I have been hearing great things about Cone Health for years from friends who are already residents in other specialties. I was drawn to this psychiatry program after hearing about how much they've invested in the community in helping patients in crisis. It is a hope of mine to move the conversation in psychiatry towards preventing hospitalizations.
