Sonya B.

Registered Nurse

Sonya RN

My path to nursing was shaped by unexpected turns and the support of my family. I was in my second year of school when my world was turned upside down by the loss of my mother. Overwhelmed by grief, I sank into depression and made the difficult decision to leave school. It felt like my dreams had crumbled, but my father’s tough love pushed me to stay in the healthcare field. His words and encouragement kept me going, and I have now been a registered nurse for 33 years.

Teaching was also a significant part of my career as I spent years educating future nurses at the university level. I loved teaching but found myself longing to return to the hospital setting where I could connect directly with patients. When I joined Cone Health, I expressed this to my boss, who suggested a perfect blend: becoming a registered nurse four. This role allows me to stay at the bedside, providing hands-on patient care, while also fulfilling my passion for teaching. I get to mentor new nurses and share my experiences, which has been incredibly rewarding.

Cone Health has been a place where I’ve found a community that supports growth and advancement. It’s reassuring to know that I’m in an environment where my ambitions are nurtured and valued. The sense of community and belonging at Cone Health has brought me immense happiness, and I’m grateful for the journey that led me here.
